Since 1976, aspiring builders in Ontario must work through Tarion, a program created by the province, to become registered in their profession. After you complete Tarion's educational requirements, fill out the paperwork and pay the fee, you can apply for registration.

You need to show that you have at least 2 years of relevant industry experience from a wide range of building construction work and activities. The majority of the experience needs to have been obtained within 10 years of the date on which the application for your licence is being made.

In order to obtain a license you are required to:Show proof of insurance.Show proof of a Surety Bond.Provide financial statements.Show proof of 4 years of work experience within the last 10 years in a related field.Pass trade, business, and law exams.

Becoming a registered builder requires an interview, testing on knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, and the posting of security to Tarion. These requirements, along with the mandatory warranty coverage, are in place to protect new home buyers from purchasing substandard homes.

There is currently no provincial licensing required to become a home inspector in Saskatchewan. However, home inspectors must follow laws related to the profession such as contracts and fair trade practices.
