The Iowa Veterans Cemetery is Iowa's only state-owned and operated veterans cemetery in Iowa. Its construction was federally funded with groundbreaking on Veterans Day in 2006 and official dedication on July 3, 2008.

VA national cemeteries accept all caskets for burial that meet the standards specified in state law of the state where the cemetery is located. Unfortunately, VA does not have the statutory authority to provide a casket for deceased Veterans.

The Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) National Cemetery Administration maintains 155 national cemeteries in 42 states and Puerto Rico as well as 34 soldiers' lots and monument sites.

Soldiers from the North and South died at the hospitals in Keokuk and were subsequently buried in what became Iowa's only National Cemetery (administered by the Rock Island National Cemetery located in Rock Island, IL).

Eligibility for burial is the same as those for burial at national cemeteries. Basically, that means any veteran separated from the service other than dishonorably, the veteran's spouse, and eligible dependent children may be interred at the cemetery. There is NO requirement to be a resident of Iowa.

Eligible spouses and dependents may be buried, even if they predecease the Veteran. The Veterans family should make funeral or cremation arrangements with a funeral provider or cremation office.
