There are currently 49 inmates on federal death row. 13 federal death row inmates have been executed since federal executions resumed in July 2020. The last and most recent federal execution was of Dustin Higgs, who was executed on January 16, 2021.

The last public execution in the United States occurred in 1936. As in Europe, the practice of execution was moved to the privacy of chambers. Viewing remains available for those related to the person being executed, victims' families, and sometimes reporters.

A total of twenty-two death row inmates, all men, were executed in the United States in 2019, twenty by lethal injection and two, in Tennessee, by electrocution.

May 1, 2001 -- The United States has a long history of so-called "legal" public executions. The last one was carried out in Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1936 when Rainey Bethea was hanged after his conviction for the rape and murder of a 70-year-old woman.

In 2012, Connecticut abolished the death penalty for future crimes.

Consequently, the execution of Oliver Watkins on August 2, 1831, became the last public hanging administered by the State of Connecticut.

657 executions were recorded in 2019. That's down 5% on 2018, and represented the lowest number in more than a decade. The number of countries which have formally abolished the death penalty had been steadily increasing, from 48 in 1991 to 106 in 2017.

Seventeen prisoners were executed in the United States in 2020. Five states and the Federal Government carried out executions. An unexpected error occurred.

July 25, 2019: The federal government announces a new execution protocol and execution dates for five federal death row prisoners: Alfred Bourgeois, Dustin Lee Honken, Daniel Lewis Lee, Lezmond Mitchell, and Wesley Ira Purkey. October 4, 2019: Lezmond Mitchell's execution is stayed by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
