Watch for pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists between your vehicle and the curb because they can legally use the left turn lane for their left turns. Turn into any lane that is safely open, as shown by the arrows.

Left turns are so dangerous because they require the driver to divert his or her attention to multiple hazards, including other vehicles, traffic lights, blind spots, and more. This type of maneuver is even more difficult when there are circumstances that may amplify the level of danger on the road.

California Vehicle Code 22108 requires all drivers to signal at least 100 feet prior to making a turn or changing lanes. The section states: Any signal of intention to turn right or left shall be given continuously during the last 100 feet traveled by the vehicle before turning.

Look both ways and make sure that the oncoming lanes are clear. Make the turn from the designated lane (use left lane). Do not enter into the right lane. In some states, it is illegal to enter the right lane after the turn is completed.

Signal: During the last 100 feet before reaching the turning point (left or right turn). Before every lane change. Check your mirrors, look over your shoulder, and check your blind spot before changing lanes.

If you drive on the right side of the road, it's the left lane, if on the Left side of the road it's the Right lane. Same principle. With 3+ lanes, through traffic should stay in the center lane except for especially slow vehicles. The right most lane is for vehicles entering and exiting traffic.

If there are two right turn lanes and you are in the one nearest the curb, you must stay in that lane during the turn. So, to recap, in California, when turn left you may pick any lane, for right turns stay in the lane you started in.

You can signal with your hand and arm or with your vehicle's turn signals and brake lights. You should signal at least 100 feet before you turn so the other drivers can be ready.
